Apologies

If you are at all like me, during this particularly stressful time, I have found myself apologizing much more than I normally do. Apologies are difficult and many times apologies are quite messy. At times, I struggle to know how to start. Other times, I can’t make it through an apology without making the situation even worse. However, an authentic, considerate apology can repair a rift in a relationship and deepen connection.

As a couples therapist, I have seen all types of attempts at apologies. We often get in our own way when apologizing and do it for the wrong reasons or easily slip into defensiveness, justification, and a myriad of other pitfalls.

Dr. Harriet Lerner recently joined Brené Brown on her podcast to discuss the topic of apologies. I highly recommend this podcast for couples and for anyone who struggles to say, “I’m sorry.” You can find the podcast here: “I’m Sorry: How to Apologize and Why it Matters.”

Marriage counseling (or couples therapy) is a great place to practice the art of apologizing and to invest in your relationship. Please reach out to me if you are interested in learning more.

In the meantime, here is some help from Dr. Lerner:
